In this online institute you will learn how to design a sequence of activities to capture and maintain learners energy while allowing students to demonstrate progress toward learning targets. Discover how to sequence lessons keeping in mind the age and attention span of the learners making certain that they frequently demonstrate independent application of new learning. Apply retrieval strategies that allow learners to recycle and demonstrate retention of learning. Join national consultant, Laura Terrill, and other educators for three days to acquire, process and apply new learning in small group discussions. You can’t do it all and there is never enough time. This summer, explore effective practices and start the school year more energized and ready to embed practices that keep the focus on the learner.

Laura Terrill is a national consultant who most recently currently served as the Senior Associate for Professional Development for the National Foreign Language Center (NFLC) at the University of Maryland. Laura taught French at all levels for 21 years before becoming the Coordinator of Foreign Language and English as a Second Language and then, Director of Curriculum. She has taught methods courses in St. Louis and in Indianapolis and continues to present at the local, state, regional and national levels. She is the recipient of the Founders Award for Central States, has was named the NADSFL District Supervisor of the Year and received the ACTFL Florence Steiner Award for Leadership. She recently co-authored the Second Edition of ACTFL Keys to Planning for Learning: Effective Curriculum, Unit and Lesson Design.

All institute schedules are posted as Eastern Time. You agree to be aware of differences in your timezone and join every required session on time.

All institutes includes synchronous presentations as well as time for independent/small group work. You agree to participate in all learning activities and throughout the day.

All institutes will use Zoom for all synchronous learning activities. You will need to make sure to have a computer with a functioning web camera, microphone and headsets.

All institutes will use Catalyst to share all institute information including daily zoom links. You will receive an invitation to join a private group on Catalyst prior to the start of the institute.

Register for this PEARLL Summer Institute by clicking the button below. If you plan to register for more than one institute, you will need to complete registration for each separately.

Registration is limited to no more 20 educators in order to personalize the learning for each participant.

Registration will close three business days before the start of each institute.

All registrations must include payment via credit card. Registrations via purchase orders cannot be not accepted by the University of Maryland.

All registrations are on a non-credit basis. A professional development certificate for 15 hours will be made available upon completion of all tasks at the end of each institute.
